When Joe Weber showed me his lab and his dynamic gravitational wave detector, I asked him what he wanted to use gravitational waves for. What was his purpose? He said, without hesitation, it was for 3D gravitational communication. Today his description would match soliton solutions of the nonlinear wave equation for the vacuum. That was about 1978 at the University of Maryland at College Park. But he told me not to follow his work, but rather what his student/ partner, Robert Forward was doing. Robert’s dissertation is “Detectors for Dynamic Gravitational Fields” and it shows how to combine dynamic gravitational fields and electrodynamics into one practical engineering discipline. Solving the field equations and the technologies to measure and control the fields needed did not exist in 1978. But most of them do now.

The story made me wonder if their “marriage” as parents of Pip, is already happening in the world somewhere. Parental rights, visitation rights, ownership of pets is intense and as intricate as for children. Now that it is increasingly possible to make machine learning interfaces to translate “animal” languages (all data from nearly infinite ways of observing and measuring behaviors and signals from any living creature, no matter how large or small or complex) and translate that to human understandable, record-able and readable (by the creature too) forms.

That is a bit hard to say for the first time, but it is not that difficult, compared to where it was even a few years ago. Teaching AIs or teaching mammals or any organism or organic system is possible now. It is not hard, just “numerous” (lots of pieces none impossible). Requiring patience, care, attention to detail, and intention to do a good job of it – for the good of all.

My feeling is that stories in human society are intended to converge to convenient, efficient knowledge. Ready at hand, well revised and understandable, easy to apply. The stories explain the ramifications and variations that are possible. A form of common knowledge that anyone, in most any human language can understand. Billions will see some of the dramas online, hundreds of millions of views are common for even commercial efforts, let alone grass roots memes that fit human needs. A good story will be discussed and remembered and applied to millions even billions of lives. The issues and choices examined in stories can be the core of “what is right and good” in the world. But by evolution and collective effort. I am still trying to understand it. Perhaps I will never be able to express it well enough to be useful.
