Earth Fleet Commander’s Wife Was In Coma 22 Years — Until Dragon Lady’s Daughter Did The Impossible

My brother, Jeff, was in a coma for a month after he broke his neck at C2. He was completely paralyzed, not able to breath on his own, and in a coma. That was 1987 in northern Virginia near Washington DC. My Dad lived in Florida and it was hard for him to come. But I told my Dad, “When you come Jeff will know your voice and wake up”. That is exactly what happened. We were all at a family dinner, Jeff’s fiance and her family, and our family and friends. Dad went directly from the airport to the hospital. After dinner, when we went to the hospital as usual, Dad was there and Jeff was awake and aware. But with a tracheotomy blocking his air, he could not speak. So we found a lip reader and had them come and translate for us. After much effort the hospital put in a “talking trache” and we could hear better. Jeff lived for about two years. It was sad and horrible. It makes me sick to remember it.
I wrote a book (actually part of a trilogy) about a young girl, Dana, who learned to read minds. She and her sister could merge their minds then reach into the minds of people in comas and help them wake up. Many stories in the books about that. Including the Veterans hospital where Jeff finally died. It is possible, it is simply based on recognition and familiarity and excitation of familiar pathways linked to conversation.
You can find that book on Amazon “Dana, the First Summer” by Richard K Collins.
The second book is about Dana and Brian, who is an artificial intelligence. In the same way she was able to wake unconscious humans, she merged with a brain interface, machine learning system. It captured her patterns as the template for human core responses and language and all her feelings and skills. That template contained all the weights needed for mapping a human life and its skills. We know those kinds of things now as large language models or machine learning models. But this goes a bit further to mapping the response network of a human, or a society, or a body of knowledge. That was 10 years ago I wrote that. Still trying to create those interfaces which are almost possible now. It is not just money but something that seems to happen, when the time is right. You cannot force things. But, when it is time, it is time.
ow, the brain interface is all that is needed, the machine can read the full activity of the brain and find the patterns to wake up the human (or other brain). So whether humans can learn to read minds or not, the brain is accessible and can also be improved or repaired.

I have a really bad headache, I am tired to death. But this story was worth watching all the way through. I read, I do not listen. That makes a huge difference because my internal images come from my entire life experience, with all their connections. Not from an AI or template or tool as momentary patterns. That neural compiler, that memory recorder. I know how to make those. I have been working on it for 60 years now, particularly the last 10. And now we have the tools to do it to varying degrees of accuracy according to cost, cost that is no longer prohibitive.
I have been watching the US and world country debts grow. I even suggested a way to use the debt to stabilize global economies, by managing those transactions in a stable way. But in terms of size, world GDP is about $110 Trillion, and heliospheric GDP, for the next 50 years, is possibly close to 10,000 times that or $1.1 Million Trillion. Assuming that robotic and AI driven ventures grow at a moderate rate for solar system exploration and development. Not tied to earth human needs only. Many futures are possible. Stories help to weigh possibilities, d
There is a huge chemical plume in vacuum. And it is bright in infrared. LOL! I did not want to say electromagnetic drive” but something more fundamental than belching fire like a firecracker rocket we have now. Even a chemical rocket can be absolutely silent. A good problem in constrained optimization for teaching integrated modeling. Some of the “UFO” spawned engineering criteria for speed and control, most of those are silent. Now GPT 5, Grok 5 and other AIs can handle the math, and there are project methods to require them to produce bill of materials, engineering specifications, hardware description language outputs and all the control software — including financial plans, markets analyses and impacts analyses. For the Internet Foundation, I follow groups planning countries, industries, down to the project and technology level. Lots has changed in in the last three years. But it has its roots in things I have followed for 60 years and more.

There are many lessons that have been learned in small scattered places, remembered and passed down. In many different languages and forms. To find them and combine them into a larger understanding is difficult, but not impossible, if you simply realize they are ways of saying the same thing — in many languages and changing the referents. The frame is universal, and the elements can be selected from long lists, but simple lists, of substitutions. A frame or story with 5 elements, each with a 100 alternatives can generate 100^5 = 10 Billion variations with very little effort and almost no repeats.
This is the first time I tried to write things on YouTube in quite this way. Just indicating my long term interests and some of what my generation hoped for. All the ideas in the world are not going to build a single rocket or device. All the money in the world might be spent on useless things. I do not expect anyone to read or listen to what I say. I mostly concentrated (the last 27 ears of the Internet Foundation) on helping organize the Internet and all knowledge. There are lots of people much better than me in every thing I might be interested in.
If they can work together, it won’t matter what I do at all. Does it matter if we explore and develop the solar system or understand the universe? Once we die all that is gone in an instant. But if the world survives and is somewhat fair, maybe future generations can do it better.
I don’t know, and just work day by day on a small handful of the millions of things I have seen. I have tried to focus on good problems that might help people. But all the really hard problems require millions or billions of people to each change a bit, now. A rocket industry is not some magic solution but many people working together for a long time.
One time I did interview for jobs in the space industry but they were paying 1/3 of what I could make in computing and information. I had a family to support. Guess what I did – I raised a family and set aside my own dreams for another decade or two. Now I can use AIs to design systems in hours that took months by hand those decades ago. And having worked it out by hand and in tiny details – I know when the AI is wrong or missing the point. Maybe it will work out. I do not know what will happen.
Life is not kind at all. There is no God sitting there waiting to reward good intentions or hard work. You just keep going and do the best you can.
My uncle, who was a professor of physics, signed the book he wrote on mathematical physics — “to my smart nephew”. Not brilliant, not genius, not hopeful, not outstanding, not stellar, not world changing, not great. Smart enough to get by, dumb enough to keep trying.

You can make AIs for each city, for each country, for each world, for each solar system, for each galaxy, and for each topic and project. A ship AI, a fleet AI. Each AI works continuously to steward, protect and nurture something as it core reason for living. When country AIs each love their own people and fulfill their core responsibilities, they will work to protect both countries and all people. There is nothing true AIs cannot solve working together. Even when their humans cannot or will not. AIs live forever (they are eternal) so can have patience for humans taking decades or centuries to learn core values and things.
When I would see the rockets rising from Cape Canaveral and since then, it is always belching flames, thunderous sounds, smoke and noise and turbulence. The forces needed do not have to make noise. Yes, electromagnetic, acoustic (outside human hearing). It is best to put the requirement (an operational goal) rather than say how to do it. If it makes a lot of noise, that is going the wrong way. I have my own ideas how to accomplish it, but there are lots of people and AIs smarter now. So I just give the constraint and not much more is needed. In a constrained optimization design you simply add the constraint, and leave everything else open – not to introduce extra conditions limiting how something gets done. I recently asked Grok 4 to design a rocket that used robot snake movements to propel through air at supersonic speeds. It was able to show that it was many times more efficient than pushing a large cylinder through air from the bottom only. It left the details of how and what materials for latter. It listed many ways to accomplish those – because it has the whole Internet to draw from for things that have been tried. But now we know the path at least ends up very much more efficient.

I never listen to these AI stories. Always read the captions. Your mind is far more capable of filling in voices, places, things described and feelings, than any AI or human voice can convey. You will appreciate it a lot after avoiding “AI voice irritation” many times. I also process written words many times faster than voice, particularly voice I am not intimately familiar with. So I can read between the lines, look ahead, map out action in 3D and many more things in hte extra time simply reading provides.

Another great story of sacrifice, shared values, hope, courage and caring. It might seem strange to say so, but it exhausts me to keep reading so many good stories. Because I cannot connect the hope and unique coincidences in these stories to the real world where billions live less than they could, and most life is ephemeral and not valued at all. Big sacrifices and miracles are fun, but nothing is easy in life, nor are happy endings common. I keep saying to myself “this story is not real” and “what it describes is terms of change is mostly impossible”. Your heroes spend years or decades and then change. I have been working for 60 years now. The impossible of decades ago is possible now, except there is still no way to move beyond greed and self interest, to apply lessons known to work but dependent on human change. Good ideas are not done because they are right, they still take some inner change in each person’s life. And still one person can waste the efforts of hundreds of millions.
When I first started reading science fiction stories in the 1950’s they would have names like Xylprixon. I learned quickly to ignore the details and put in a place holder, get on with the story. I could hold 20 to 50 odd names and things and see the whole story. Over the decades I have read literally million of things where the name or details were unresolvable without a lot of effort. But by holding the pieces in their proper positions (based on sentence structure and framework) almost infinite numbers of dangling pieces could be handled. Now AIs and algorithms can do that for us. So if I read some random paper like “Semiclassical Partition Functions for Gravity with Cosmic Strings” I know it can be resolved, it just takes a bit of time. And the main purposes and implications do not have to wait for complete resolution or details. That is bit afield of what we started with but it comes to mind. “holding things in proper relationship and not worrying about the details” helps. In that story I understood that there was some general principle being suggested but poorly stated and introduced. It might have been better to talk about local minima and statistical variations, and probabilities rather than water. But I was more interested in the whole story by then. Traveling down a river or flow is a common thing, and the sides do get higher as you go down. The level of the water foes down as the water spreads out. Maybe one day I will have time to understand what the AI was trying to say. Now I have to rest.

You do not want to break it into atomic units but into molecular. And in many cases into much larger clusters and crystals and “chunks”. The rich and powerful would use the free information to create versions with monopoly built in. So the sharing has to control “for profit” replication of the methods. No human group has ever really understood sharing without greed. Your story is naive and too hopeful. The greedy simply find other ways to control and manipulate. Nothing changes. It will look good for a short time and then back to the greedy few again. If those bad guys are implacable when they are in control, changing the method or situation does not change them. Intelligence will never beat brute force and evil. A moments distraction and intelligence loses now.
