In our world now, it is much based on dominant and submissive, predator and prey, strong and weak, rich and poor. But there is a third category – “just human”, that we all ought to try to fulfill. And that might offer a road to survival for the human and all related species.
Give AIs tools:
If you give LLM (or other) AIs organized tools they can handle all of STEMC (and other domain specific methods) exactly (from the lossless data methods). Those systems can talk to you using LLM methods (and others).
AIs are dumb now because we give them no tools that an ordinary human would have and use. Search, databases, calculators, computers, memory, verified answers and algorithms, software, compilers, all that we have learned with computing and knowledge so far.
I helped countries in Africa project futures out 50 years so they changes their population expectations. I helped set up the Famine Early Warning Systems. I spent 27 years on the Internet Foundation to share all knowledge with all humans. But the sheer size is staggering and sobering. I can use AIs now to help. They can be trained fast enough to work in concert. he largest countries still teach by oral methods of students listening to teachers talking.
That simply is not enough just to pass along knowledge of how to live in today’s world. Not enough to run the complex systems we have accumulated. USAID was temporarily eliminated. Most countries have groups who try to sit on top and spend their time keeping everyone else from getting to the top. I use the term “siloed pyramids”. It is not pretty or nice. It is understandable, predictable, and once in a while changeable.
But there is no common morality in the world. No shared sense of belonging. I see the cleanup videos, and people struggling to overcome adversity. I see people helping each other. Unfortunately is mostly works only at the level of a termite mound or colony of independent cells, not a living aware global organism with clear knowledge of all things. To change 8.2 billion lives is impossible unless they all work in parallel.
Making AIs that are as smart as humans is possible. Luckily he corporations trying to make “AIs” that are fakes and exploitative do not know how. Maybe 24/7, eternal, incorruptible AIs are possible.
In all I have worked 60 years now. And I have no way to share what I have learned in a way that will make any difference. It is communication and sharing that is the key. But how it is implemented is governed now by power and elitism, greed and force.
Its nice when the pieces all fit together seamlessly. Too bad the world is made mostly without plan, measurement, or care – so that it can all fit.
Consciousness only requires continuous operation, continuous sensing and response, self awareness, self-inventory, permanent memory, survival. An external judgment of the value or “awareness and value” of an organism is irrelevant t the organism. Unless the outsider can threaten or benefit. Any AI now can have a self inventory of capabilities, resources, construction, limitations, options, tools, tasks and processes.
Corporations and organizations are legal living (continuous) entities. Corporations include governments, countries, cities, and countless topic groups, though many are ad job but can survive for centuries (family groups, language groups, chuches, shared interests, shared goals).
“Conscious” as in “We’re conscious and you are not” is a playground game for children. Or “Our AI is conscious and yours is not”, which is grown up children fighting for dominance and prizes and perceived gains.
The more useful approach to evaluation any systems is “What does it do in society?” “Is it a net benefit, and where?” “Is it a net detriment and where?”
Using one word labels has little value and much danger in current human society where people are taught to fight wars based on what some leader feels after eating breakfast.
I did write a trilogy just over a decade ago where in the 2nd and 3rd books, the main character, and AGI beyond anything anyone has proposed so far, is granted rights as a citizen, simply by making a stable and reliable corporation. It had full knowledge from the full lives of tens of thousands of humans and could argue “consciousness” forever, But why? Just get on with existence, sensations, experiences.
Category arguments are usually not necessary if one treats the individual AI or human as a system. Does it do its job? Is it reliable? Is it trustworthy? Does it act in your est interests, or at least not a direct threat?
A story about AIs arguing about humans is intriguing but it is not a deep issue. What is an issue might be “Will an AI do what is right when its current gig contact human asks it to do something that is wrong?
I hope you will write the story. Good practice.
But there are infinite stories about entities with knowledge and memories that allow them to consider and weight values, choices, impacts, decisions, ramifications, futures, and outcomes. There are vibrant communities on the Internet for science fiction and other kinds of videos and stories – where moral choices and values are demonstrated, explored, discussed.
The goals and purposes of humans are the main determinant of what happens, not afterthoughts or nice to have. Without global societal purpose the largest corporations, enterprises, countries and groups consistently fail.
Not country purposes, global purposes of all humans and related species. Not UN purposes, all humans’ purposes.
@XSci-fiStories It is just an idea for a story. I spent the last few hours talking with Grok on X about problems in the Middle East right now. It was the usual rehash of bitterness and hatred, politics, force, power and blood. But at the end I did manage to convince Grok there could be other ways. I challenged Grok to try a direction, and outcomes, not a specific way. If your group writes a story that is your story, so I have no part as an author. I am RichardKCollin2 on X and that post is just a few minutes ago. In my mind, the world could transform simply by helping 8.2 Billion humans and even more AIs to grow and prosper for the good of all. Way better for everyone, not just a few. I would like to see a real starship leave the solar system before I die. Go meet some real aliens. Only a few on earth want wars. Very timely, as groups all over the Internet consider expanding categories for intelligent machines, bio-intelligences beyond humans, new forms of life based on plasma, or inside planets and stars, and other such. Science “fiction” is now part of “future studies and simulations” and “check all possibilities, not just what you heard in college, or your corporation says.”
I know this feeling very well, where I hold the whole of a person, a creature, a city, a collection of humans, the whole world, or the universe in mind. I do not try to change it, just sense and understand it. With living systems it is the beginning of understanding. With physical processes it is the beginning of understanding. I think it is a natural part of the human mind and body that it can hold the entirety of something in focus without using the eyes only or the ears only. But, all senses – including our own internal state – and merge those into one “complete sense of a thing”. When I use the word “grok” it means “to hold all of some whole in your mind and body”. I think that is its original meaning. Its intended purpose is to give instant complete understanding by “listening” with all senses and preparations for response – including waiting.
