This is a bit personal, but I will write it. When I was quite young, my father who studied history, showed me a book called “Gods, Graves and Scholars”. It might not be a central text, or any deep tome, but it opened my eyes to reverence for things past and their preservation. It made me want to see inside the earth and inside matter so that ancient sites were NOT dug up, but scanned in digital form so many future generations, with better tools and methods could continue to nondestructively observe the original – in place – preserved and undisturbed.

All my Mother’s family had large families so when we got together for holidays there were 22 first cousins plus 5 aunts and 5 uncles, grandparents and usually handfuls of babies and friends and neighbors. Breakfast, for my parents, and us 6 kids, had a practical coordinating and synchronizing effect, and everyone helped in preparation and clean up. Learning chores and responsibility, caring for and anticipating others’ needs – extends to all situations where groups have to work together. It is a place to naturally anticipate needs, to have empathy, to notice situations, and quite a bit of teasing, joking, challenges and simple communication. I can usually walk into any large group and quickly be aware of how everyone feels and who has something important or urgent to say. A great skill for generating consensus or coordinating work – it comes from shared meals, shared work, shared events, shared responsibilities, and awareness of the whole world.
