Global Open Formats

My comment:
All I can do is offer you a cup of coffee. Maybe $10 is not enough to buy coffee now. I spent the last 27 years of the Internet Foundation looking at all knowledge on the Internet. A key part of that is the lack of global open formats for sharing, global collaboration and simple recording of knowledge in permanent form. Complaining about it will not have any effect. No amount of showing bad examples and saying “that is not right that should not be” will make any difference. 27 years at 52 weeks a year, 7 days a week, 12-18 hours a day is over 100,000 hours. Now I have an understanding of what is possible, what is needed, why we should do things and the cost and savings. But you cannot change these corporations and organizations and governments. A perfect technical solution sounds nice but then the world explodes into wars and chaos, and no individual matters at all. Sorry to sound discouraged, but one format is nearly impossible to document and use. Try to map and change the UN or a topic like “poverty” or “armed conflicts” or “open education for all”. Maybe you can get bottled water for $10 but what to do with the empty bottle now? Don’t give up. Pick something that does not depend on computers. Marble sculpture used to be relaxing for me. Or drawing and painting on paper.
