That is how bad mathematics visual interface is. When you have tools for mathematics that actually do something, it is MORE powerful and immersive than any video game, any movie, any chat. For the Internet Foundation every month, I see thousands of documents with mathematics. I have to fight off the feelings of disgust when I see people dumping that on the Internet.
Mathematics is NOT static symbols on paper and screens. It is the dynamic processes the mathematical symbols are suppose to generate. That poor kid watching a “math video” is NOT watching a video of how mathematics does things. He is looking at instructions. That Star Wars is the dynamic results of many many many people who crafted visualizations and sounds. If you sat with them for thousands of hours as they manually crafted the pieces you might be bored to tears or fidgeting.
I do not care what someone does while they absorb knowledge. I get many powerful ideas while I am washing dishes or cutting vegetable to make soups. So classifying fidget as bad and still as good has serious issues of its own.
That kinds of education design implied by “how bad some other educators are” pales when you look the design and assumption and lack of effort in this study itself.
If you take any person, fidgety or not and give them bad tasks that do not challenge and engage them, If you force them down pathways they do not want to go, it won’t work. Temple Grandin understands that at a deep level.
What subtle messages did they give that they wanted one kid to sit still and the other one to fidget?
Math is NOT “visual” (passive), it is dynamic and it does things that you can control.
