Get real jobs, not useless academic ones

Get a real job, out of the paper chase. Preferably something that helps the whole world, or something larger than yourself. It only needs to pay the bills, and can be anywhere in the world. Take 5 years and try to apply your newly acquired understanding (I hope you found things) to hard problems, not made up ones that one person or a few extracted from you under duress and coercion. If you are not smart enough to survive and do any job in the world, you should give your gold star back and ask for a refund.

Hi Heather. You are replying to the main post, but I am trying to understand what “You think teaching is not larger than the teacher?” means. The opposite?

“Teaching is larger than the teacher”? The other students, the classes and teachers as a whole. Time to think and explore. Learning not just listening and watching talking heads. The world bombarding you with unfiltered “stuff”?

If you have been teaching. Is it mentoring, guiding, helping, facilitating, encouraging, challenging, preparing, sharing, working together, collaborating, reaching out, showing possibilities, giving good examples not bad ones? Real tasks, real issues, deep looks at large things. Or entertaining, showing off, copying stuff to show, ego, putting in time, repeating the same things forever, shallow problems, irrelevant things?

If this is too tangential for what you intended, please just ignore me. I do think your thesis “Teaching is larger than the teacher” deserves some effort on your part to clarify the things you seem to have felt strongly enough for a little “wtf”. Looking forward to reading what you discover and share.

Too bad X is so poorly indexed and biased and disorganized, with no real tools for collaborative sharing on real things.
